AJAX, since 2002, also stands for 'Asynchronous JavaScript And XML'.
It's (most likely) this kind of AJAX which we may decide to use for implementing your web application.
AJAX boils down to the browser loading data (typically xml and invisible to the user) and using JavaScript in the browser to render the user interface. This obviously removes the 'formatting of the data on the server' aspect of typical (shortly old-fashioned) web applications.
