Shrimps

Oostduinkerke is the shrimp village of Belgium, if not the world. Since 1502, horses have been used to trawl nets on the Belgian coast of this charming village.

During summer, the fishermen just fish fot the tourists; this means that they fish for about half an hour so on those days they don't catch lot of shrimps...

You want to see the real fishing? Then you'd better stop by in spring or autumn. You can arrange a day to join Johan at sea. These kind of excursions are very popular among schools. They go on beach holidays and visit the shrimpfisher. In group, you can go to sea by foot (De Paardehoeve is at 1,2 miles from the sea)or you can go by carriage, as you wish. Once you are at sea, Johan will explain and show everything you want to know about shrimpfishing. Afterwards, you return to De Paardehoeve where Linda cleans and cooks the shrimps. Last but definitely not least: you can taste the shrimps, still warm from cooking! A true delicacy!

The love for the Belgian draft horses is in the blood. So proves the youngest son of the family Vandendriessche. Since the age of fourteen Dominique also goes shrimpfishing by horse! He and his dad are two of the seven shrimpfishers by horse.
